Anyone can benefit from a therapeutic relationship. Whether experiencing difficulties linked to a specific issue or living with a more general sense of dissatisfaction or unease, a therapeutic relationship based on trust and respect enables people to creatively explore whatever is confronting them.
It is natural to want a swift resolution to the problems we face in life and short-term therapy can help to progress a situation where there is perhaps confusion or a sense of being stuck with a particular issue. However, sometimes there simply isn’t a straightforward solution to events, for example bereavement or other loss, which can bring crisis to the foundations of our life. Or it may be that our very existence seems to be characterised by despair, meaninglessness, alienation, overwhelming anxiety or other intense forms of disquiet for no apparent reason.
Matthew works with individuals and couples experiencing any kind of difficulty; whether people are looking to address a specific problem, struggling to find a reason to carry on living, or anything and everything in between. His approach is based upon principles of existentialism. Notions of ‘diagnosis’, ‘prognosis’ and ‘cure’ are avoided and answers are sought within people’s lived experience rather than any pre-defined and inflexible psychological models.
